I’ll bet you think this photo looks a lot like yesterday’s post, right?  Well, it kind of is, but this hard-to-figure-out photo is of another project altogether.  This is the frame for a ’37 GMC Flatbed that is being restored here.  Like the ’41 I posted yesterday, this one is for a customer that is doing part of the work and having part of the work done here.  That often works really well.

When this frame came in it was reeealy bent.  See how the ends are bent out of shape?  Well that’s the easy stuff to fix.  The harder thing is that the frame is banana shaped and trapezoided!

The solution?  Grab a frame that’s straight in the back and graft the two together.  The frame that came in was racked in the back half, and the customer had another frame that was wrecked beyond repair in the front.  So the two met in the middle and lived happily ever after.

Form follows function, so a perfect weld should look pretty, right?

Before the pretty weld was made on this 1937 GMC truck a V-Groove is cut so there is good penetration to the parent material.  Done correctly a weld like this is stronger than the original steel.

Like all good stories, this one has more than its bit of twists and turns.  This is the left front bumper mount on the ’37 GMC.  The part to the left of the big snotty mess is a cast-iron bumper mount.  This one took a hit and broke, so someone gooped it back together at some time in history rather than replace it.  It’s hard to get to, maybe it was -40 and his kids were waiting for him to finish.

But since this work is being done indoors it’s easy to ignore the children’s needs and do perfect work.  This photo shows the same section of frame after the broken bumper mount and big crummy weld have been lopped off.

And finally here’s the new rear crossmember.  It’s not like you can buy this kind of stuff off the shelf, so you take off the shelf stuff and cut a section out of the middle and weld it back together to make it fit.

Check back soon and the frame will be painted with Eastwood’s Ceramic Chassis Black!
